vuong’s writing is absolutely breathtaking, and his background as a poet makes reading this book such a beautiful experience.

little dog’s relationships with his mother and grandmother, along with his grandfather, were portrayed with such realistic complexity that i honestly had to sit back and take it all in a couple times.

the details of vietnam and the impact of the war on their family explored throughout the book made it such a deeply personal read for me, being the child of immigrants myself. this is such an important book, and i really recommend fellow (children of) immigrants to read it.

i really enjoyed this book and the way it gave the women of the great gatsby a story and voice—don’t let the three stars fool you! it was heartwarming and sad and shocking all the same, and if not for a few flaws in the writing and characterisation of some characters, i would’ve given this 5/5 in a heartbeat. i felt like there were some inconsistencies in the writing and the repetition of words like bona fide made me want to scream sometimes

i really adore this book for many reasons. the main is how seen i feel. reading this book made me cry many times, just due to how overwhelming it was to read about people like me who struggle with the same things as i do. it might sound silly and small, but i have never encountered a book where the characters are from lahore (my home city) and it made me incredibly emotional.

thank you sabaa tahir for this masterpiece.
