Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco
5.0
4.5 or 5 ⭐️ (still not sure)
I truly adore and love this book and I'm looking forward to reading the sequel that looks as interesting as the first.
The writing was fantastic and we can notice that the author did a lot of research, not just about Jack The Ripper but also about all the forensic stuff described in the book. It was the first time I wanted to look up at words I didn't understand (since I'm Italian) because I was deeply captured into the story and I wanted to understand everything.
The characters were also amazingly written and their psychological features were well described. I love Audrey Rose, we can say she's a proto-feminist that want to be something Society doesn't want women to be and she fights for a change but can also stay in the canonically feminine traits (since she likes clothes and makeup). I also supported everything she does in the novel, her actions were well constructed and she acted just right.
I didn't really like Thomas even if I can see why everyone does: maybe is because I didn't like the romance between the two, but we'll talk about it later. He's like Sherlock Holmes and I adore this of him but at the same time he seems too preoccupied of Audrey Rose then about the case itself and that's what I didn't like about him, but in general, he's not my type I guess.
And then there's Jack The Ripper itself: I think this is the first time I actually guess who the murder was! I don't say it was predictable but I just suspect he was him. Nathaniel was too a perfect brother and probably because of this was the least suspectable. I just had the feeling it was him and I'm so happy it was: if the Ripper was the father or Blackburn or Thomas I would have thrown away the book because they were predictable. My suspects were Nathaniel and the Uncle!
The love story was totally unnecessary! Since the duo, Audrey Rose - Thomas is like Holmers - Watson, I aspected that the two of them won't end up together. I know that many people like Johnlock and I think that the author's choice of creating a female-male duo was for the pleasure of having a love story since Conan Doyle didn't give Sherlock and John one.
In this case, love was deeply unnecessary because the focus was on the discovery of who was Jack the Ripper and not on the love between the two. I would have liked the book better if they didn't end up together.
