Idlewild by James Frankie Thomas

Stayed up past midnight reading this I had soooooo much fun I’m obsessed with these characters. The Othello plotline had me thinking a lot about Both Sides Now, Idlewild does it better and less didactically but it’s something I still need to think about.. Mapping out my own gender is always a puzzling experience and I’ll vacuum up any book that comes close to touching it.

This is SO dense and so full of fascinating leftist political discourse from the 80s, 90s, and 00s but it’s also a soap opera about dykes who can’t stop cheating on each other. Really great if you need a reminder that commie lesbians have always been arguing over the same topics (even before “chronically online” was a thing you could be!)

I went back and forth so much on whether the main character being annoying ruined the book experience, but overall I think I had a good time. I really liked the world building of the parallel dimensions I thought it was funny how it was designed to preempt geeky “um-actuallys”
