Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis by J.D. Vance
5.0
I listened to the Audiobook read by Vance himself. I enjoyed his perspective and candid look at his life. He presented himself and the family he loves in an honest, sometimes painful way. His take (and it is just that *his* take) on the social, socio-economic, emotional, and physical ramifications of the world he grew up in are thought provoking and important for "outsiders" to understand. While Vance managed to graduate high school, serve in the military, graduate college, and go on to earn a law degree from Yale ~ he does not come across as condescending or insensitive.
His book isn't (and isn't meant to be) an offering of solutions or political strategies to "fix" the issues plaguing his community. He does present compelling perspective as to why some government interventions fail or pose significant problems of their own.
Highly recommend. Especially in audiobook format.
