Just Like This by Cole McCade

Both books in this series are super character driven, this one a little less so - I really love a "we must investigate" plot personally, but it's a little silly which I think could turn people off. (This school has a very loose understanding of child welfare laws, tbh.) I think Damon's experience as an Indigenous man adopted to a White family was very moving, and his desire to give their adopted Indigenous children a closer tie to their community while knowing it was likely something he wouldn't be able to achieve very tender, and a way to kind of skirt perhaps some inherent ickiness in adoption . I remain very frustrated with this duology's refusal to address safe sex practices.

I thought this was a fresh and accessible take on a more taboo premise, (former) student and teacher, and I really enjoyed seeing Summer and Fox break out of their respective shells. I had a few qualms - one of them being that protection is never discussed or used, which I just hate to see for any romance being published in this millennium. I'm looking forward to getting to the next one, though!
Some Shall Break by Ellie Marney

My favorite YA thriller series - I love Emma's strength and Travis's commitment to supporting her. It could be a little less cop-y for my tastes, but I think we're moving in that direction. Would love another book or two in this sequence!

A Power Unbound by Freya Marske
4.5
What a perfect end to this series. Fast-paced, thrilling, all the dry wit and sentient house shenanigans you've come to expect from Marske: now with more heat and emotions! Some really beautiful explorations of grief and power and responsibility here. I'm going to miss this series, and I can't wait to see what we get from Marske next!

Sheer fun, delightfully funny, a high concept that translates wonderfully to a book. I'd love more in this world!

My favorite installment in this series in a while - hot, thrilling, a fantastic mix of relationship and plot. At this point, there's far too many characters for me to keep up with, but that feels equally like a me thing as a series thing.
