The Day of the Triffids by John Wyndham

Another bleak novel from Wyndham. I hadn't read this since high school, but for some reason had the urge to revisit it. The story rollicks along easily enough, even if it never quite manages to convince... C+.

I like Vonnegut very much, but must admit that I found this one a bit of a chore. It has an impressively woven sprawl, but I dunno, seemed a little to contrived for my tastes. C-.

An enjoyable romp with convoluted set up and a sufficiently colourful cast of rapscallions, brigands and ne'er-do-wells. Not Hammett's finest writing though. Really, any time a character says something "carelessly" "cautiously" or "callously" nine times on a page, time to get a new editor! B.

Seemingly a classic in lesbian fiction. That might explain why this non-lesbian didn't enjoy this at all. Are they making love or arranging flowers? I certainly couldn't tell...

Fantastic stuff. This parable is universal, and just (if not more) relevant today than it was when first written. Really great stuff!

What an odd little book. Essentially a psychological analysis of how one person (in this case the obdurate matriarch of a clan) can inflict emotional damage across generations. The titular Great Granny is stuck in the "correctness" of her own Victorian youth. Her daughter is driven mad and talks to the fairies. Her granddaughter parties all night, smokes all day, and parties obsessively. She also constantly attempts suicide. Deceptively concise, this one is a sleeper.
