Didn't think this would end up being the perfect NYE book - only read it b/c it's short & for reasons I can't explain I needed to read 85 books this year. Took 1 star off for Sukie being cringe 2šŸŽ‡

Thought this would be cringe but itā€™s surprisingly charming. Schwarzenegger narrates the audiobook & his thick Austrian accent goes down a treat! 3šŸ¦¾

I can see why he was a successful politician; he comes across as charismatic, practical, matter of fact, industrious.

A funny excerpt from the book where heā€™s explaining how anyone can achieve a goal by breaking down and organising every hour in your day:
ā€œBut what about time for rest and relaxation?
*Chuckles*
first of all rest is for babies and relaxation is for retired peopleā€¦
ā€¦But fine if you want relaxation take half of the remaining time for your little napā€

Delightfully British! Canā€™t believe it hasnā€™t been adapted for the screen but it looks like MTC did a musical production of it last year 3šŸŽ·

Marnie Fowler is as pathetic as her namesake in Lena Dunhamā€™s GIRLS; including having a low paying hospo job with no career prospects and simping over a finance guy with a girlfriend (justice for Tash, she deserved better!) 3ā˜•ļø

To me this book is a poor-womanā€™s Really Good, Actually - similar story arc but nowhere near as funny.

NB I canā€™t stand the audiobook narratorā€™s pronunciation of ā€˜Melbourniansā€™!!
Itā€™s Mel-bern-ians (as in Bernie Sanders not Jason Bourne).

Despite its shortcomings I did enjoy reading the book (and wouldā€™ve finished it sooner if my audiobook app didnā€™t break 3/4 through).

There was something very nostalgic reading about Melbourne being far from home (apart from all the covid/lockdown references).

Perhaps Iā€™ve become too much of a snob after 2 months in Bandung but I couldnā€™t get into this 2šŸ¦œ

Although references to Sunda culture are technically correct - it feels forced and unnatural (like someone has visited West Java for a week and then googled a bunch of stuff).

Contrastingly my reading experience (in Aus) of Beauty is a Wound by Eka Kurniawan (set in Indo, same time period but written by an Indo) was much better and immersive!

Also the audiobook narration made 0 sense: why get a British woman who cannot pronounce any of the Indo or Sunda words to narrate this story? (Plus itā€™s an Aussie book!) 0 stars for the audiobook.

I really donā€™t know who this book is for: as someone who understands the language and culture I found the writing inauthentic, stilted and without soul but those who arenā€™t familiar with the language/culture will find the writing alienating and difficult to follow as there are countless cultural references and terms.

Maaf Mirandi but it's giving June Hayward from Yellowface šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø
