On one hand this was the most boring book until 60%, then at 80% it rushed through the plot so fast you don’t get a chance to process it all.

I enjoyed the time reading the last 40%, but not enough to rate it higher than a 3 star as it was such a struggle to even get to that point.

To start, I’d like to thank Netgalley and Mills & Boon (Afterglow) for sending me this ARC.

This was a decent sapphic romance, but it wasn’t the greatest book I’ve read.

This book is about Vini (the mechanic) and Jessica (visiting the town) and their situationship that is both messy and cute, perfect for a quick read if you’re in the mood for one.

I had a couple issues, the pacing felt like it was going too fast and we were skipping through a lot of their relationship progress due to the short time Jessica is visiting the town of Peach Blossom, but it still felt at least a bit believable.

My other issue was the third act breakup did up.
Throughout the book we are shown Ava doesn’t like Jessica because of a scandal she got into, being extremely judgemental and telling her sister (who is 23) to stay away from her. It felt a bit possessive as she is in her own relationship, and it was worse when she blew up at Jessica as she and Vivi were seen kissing in the auto shop. This felt really childish and a bit of a shit reason to break up, as it should have been focused on the fact that Jessica isn’t staying long. Because of that it doesn’t make me want to pick up the first book in the series.

Overall, a decent book and I think I would read the third one in the future!

I am so severely disappointed in this book, I can’t believe I even read it.

What the fuck happened here? Like, the writing felt too YA for an adult book, the characters weren’t as fleshed out and some were useless, like what was the point of this book aside from it being filler?

I’m a huge Chloe Gong fan, all her books have gotten a five star from me but this has just ruined it. I don’t really care for what happens next, as I’m not going to bother finishing this series.

Wow. Wow.

I didn’t think I’d be rating this book so low, but the more I read the more pissed off I got.
I do like to try give some benefit of the doubt as this is a indie book but oh my god?? This was not good??

The only characters I liked were Nyzaia and Larelle who we didn’t get much of and both didn’t progress the plot at all, the only one who did was Elisara who pissed me off more than anything.
Caellum is a character who was probably the most useless, if you removed his chapters or character entirely nothing would be different.

The plot itself was abysmal. This is book one out of FIVE! And nothing happened. We have the explosion that kills all their families which intrigued me and each of their reactions and feelings to being forced rulers but after that it become unimportant, their powers were heightened cool but it was never explored properly. But then you get halfway and get an entire chapter of info dumping about these creatures who take children and it’s like what??? Why not SHOW us the threat and the damage they do why are you telling us???

I wish this book lived up to the first 20% but it didn’t, after that it just fell off into an abyss and never found its way back out.
This could have been a great book, but instead it was a big steaming pile of disappointment.
