So the pace definitely picks up. The romance is a great addition to a plot bursting with intrigue. I'm definitely grateful that I didn't give up on this series after the slow start--as predicted, it was worth it for the setup. Gloriously curious and excited to continue the series.

The pacing is slow. Like, glacial. It does pick up around the last 100 pages, but until then it's mostly setup.

The characterization could use some improvement here and there but it's mostly pretty good. I will say that the last 100 pages were so intrigueing and left me with so much curiosity that I'm definitely going to try out book 2, despite the super slow pacing. Maybe it'll be worth it!

The plot is slow but once it gets going, it really gets going. Total page turner. I will say that the romance is kind of rushed though.

The Last Raven by Helen Glynn Jones

Did not finish book. Stopped at 28%.
The beginning has some vague true blood vibes but mostly I'm not into this. The relationship feels forced and not believable at all and it feels like the author is trying to borrow from the first Blood & Ash but just doesn't have the capabilities.

There's some good story bones here. The folk magic is fun. If you're into Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Charmed, especially all the Phoebe / Cole stuff, there's a good chance you'll enjoy this.

Still, I have to say, the characterization really needs some work. Wrath makes an intriguing male MC, and Nonna is fully formed, but everyone else is kind of meh. The narrative lacks the punch of emotion and the FMC makes decisions and comes to conclusions in a way that feels very rushed.

I'll probably read the sequel but maybe not immediately.

Equal parts gritty magic and mother daughter drama. Gorgeous use of prose and metaphor. A writer that truly understands how to move plot in a significant way without overdoing any of the themes or anything.

The magic in this is similar to The Craft, for anyone wondering.

I had to deduct some points from this one because theres like a whole chapter that's literally just Ash and Sera having sex. It's like 8 times and I'm sorry but no one can come that much in a sitting lmao it was tedious to read through when the steam is usually so strategically placed.
