- Interesting small introduction to Singapore culture
What happened between Paul and Sumiko? - Did Paul actually have a fetish for east-Asian women?
- I feel like we’ve to easily push past the fact he started a relationship with his 21 year old research assistant/student, and the power imbalance there “His page listed his name, the introductory class he taught at Berkeley, and a single posting: “Pretty cool dude, but flirts with female students.””
- Some parts were written too fast paced especially
Gretchen’s ‘relationship’ with James - I hated the way Gretchen treated Frankie, just because Frankie doesn’t derive all her self worth from a relationship with a man i.e shaming her for not going on dates
- Considering the title is soy sauce for beginners, I thought there would be at least one scene of someone cooking with the soy sauce (besides the soy braised peanuts mention)
- Gretchen is an ugly name
- Gretchen also isn’t likeable or hateable
- Categorically subpar

- First 70% of the book pretty boring but after that pretty good.
- Graham, Klair and dean lack depth
I had gotten a feeling that Lana didn’t write the book, or that Lana wasn’t a real person, but I was not expecting the books have been written by his father. Now that was a good plot twist. - At no point did Graham and will establish that they were in an exclusive relationship or that they were officially dating they just went straight to introducing each other to their parents. There’s fast paced, and then there’s this
- Too much emotional vulnerability to the point it’s unrealistic
- The word ‘awe’ is used 9 times, which is a bit excessive
- Graham brother was was mentioned in one chapter then never again

A truly inspiring story about an amazing woman who has so many lives, from she 13 adopted children to the 180+ children of her school. “She is an ‘actionist’ not an activist.”
