Dolls of Our Lives: Why We Can't Quit American Girl by Allison Horrocks, Mary Mahoney

✔️format was fun and well thought out (ie. Chapters and headings)
✔️liked the historical info regarding how American Girl was created
✔️I want to go to Colonial Williamsburg now. A lot!

❌Honestly could have been a long article on like NYT or Huff Post. Felt like a lot of repetitive info
❌ I agree with the political opinions of the authors (they mentioned it a lot lol) but it felt a bit forced down the reader’s throat if you get my drift

✔️Great read for spooky season
✔️For once I blew through the first 30%, which rarely happens. Usually the LAST 30% is my jam in books
✔️I did enjoy the ending even if it was a bit ambiguous, which are usually not my most fave endings. I usually want my endings in books to be all tied up with a pretty bow
✔️All I could think about was the movie, Barbarian. Creep basement maybe?

I was so young when this crime case occurred, so I went into this knowing very few things. This was a very thorough investigation on the case and I’m so appreciative for this author putting in so much work to provide a general but thorough overview of everything!

Great build up and mediocre ending. Kept me engaged though, so I’ll give it that. Audiobook was really good with the southern accents and atmospheric eeriness. As someone who doesn’t prefer audio, I enjoyed listening.

What I really loved:
✔️I actually enjoyed the characters of this book. The main character had dealt with childhood trauma and shall we say, “good ol’ daddy issues”, so I think her actions explain themselves in this book. I don’t judge her for those actions.
✔️It was in my opinion super accurate to what I’d imagine the millennia pop industry was like. Think the chaos of what we know now about the beginnings of Britney, Christina and Nysnc.
✔️I just loved the multi media format and the nostalgia!! This was a super fun read

Thanks to Celadon and the author for sending me a review copy to read and honestly review
Unmasked: My Life Solving America's Cold Cases by Paul Holes

What I liked:
✔️knowing nothing about the golden state killer (and being a Californian!) it was really interesting to learn from the serial hunter himself, Paul Holes!
✔️I highly enjoyed hearing about the Lacey Peterson case.
✔️Easy to read and follow. Not super technical when talking about crime scene investigation

What I didn’t like:
❌I’m not Paul Holes biggest fan 😂
❌I wanted more about the Peterson case. Now I’m off to find another book about it

What I liked:
✔️Similar atmosphere and character-in-a-building as The Paris Apartment and Lock Every Door. I love those types of books, so this was a good read for that.
✔️Creepy neighbors! Yes please! (No spoilers)
✔️The flashback POV was so fun! Another aspect in books I love. Well done in this book.

I think I’m learning this author is just not for me. I started this book for bookclub and then didn’t finish it in time, but I don’t allow myself to dnf so I kept going. It was interesting but I’m just not a huge paranormal fan. The suspense was good though and I did like the character’s plot and actions. It was good I guess.

Also reminder that I’m in the worst slump of my life so my ratings are always more negatively affected by that.

As a former fan of 19 Kids and Counting, this was a highly anticipated read for me. I had first heard of this book release the day the 19 Kids documentary/tell-all released on Amazon prime. It was “fun” for me to read knowing all the scenes Jill was referring to, but obviously none of the content was fun. Especially for Jill and those she loves. This was really well done and a super quick read.
