One's Company by Ashley Hutson

4.0

Soon after Bonnie survives an unbearable trauma, her luck changes and she wins the lottery. Desperate to escape her life, everyone around her, and the constant irritation of being perceived, she uses her newfound millions to buy a secluded compound and turn it into an exact replica of the world of her favorite TV show, Three’s Company. After endless construction, resources, and non-disclosure agreements, Bonnie is ready to live out the rest of her life secluded in this highly orchestrated world—not pretending to be characters from her favorite show, but actually *being* the characters from her favorite show. Then one day she is confronted with something from her life before, and it’s something she cannot escape.

On its surface, this book is wild and absurd and darkly funny. But at its core it’s an exploration of trauma, dissociation, and the things we do to escape. I will be processing this one for a while.
