The Science of Harry Potter: How Magic Really Works by Roger Highfield

informative slow-paced

3.0

the use of pop culture references is par for the course in science communication, but naming an entire book after it is bold. and after 2020, this book becomes an example on how precarious it can be, since even a beloved franchise can fall from the graces of an audience and financially supporting works relating to it no longer desired (my copy was from the library).  do use references but maybe not make it an essential part of a long living project?
im honestly shocked this doesnt have a lower rating, because i feel like HP fans would pick this up wishing for harry potter but get little to none of it. HP references are more of a jumping point into  explanations of a topic - and sometimes it's a stretch between fantasy and topic.
the science itself is interesting and varied, so varied indeed that it is not just science (bunch of history in there). I did skim a lot of the book and read only what interested me the most.
