Anne Blankman’s “The Blackbird Girls” is an amazing middle-grade, historical fiction novel about two young girls—one Ukranian and one Jewish—evacuated from Pripyat from the Chernobyl disaster. Complicated and beautiful, it covers challenging topics like antisemitism and child abuse in a compassionate and age appropriate manner. I recommend this read for adults too.
