what a book!!
pros:
- the prose is wonderful, easy to read and beautiful in places
- tight, snappy plot, lots of tension!
- the characters are all distinct and complex and I loved' em for it!
- I really wanna read the next one!
- Bardugo's worldbuilding is so great - the language, the setting, the history, the prejudices is all so thought-out and natural
- the whump and angst~
- Inej, Kaz, Matthias, Nina, Jesper, Wylan - the whole team is wonderful
- the friendships! Nina and Inej's loyalty and soft moments were just the absolute best!! (and in this way I think it really improved on the shadow and bone series where Alina was Different from All the Other Girls and Mal was a bit of a useless wet blouse. I really really cared for these characters and the sense of a team helped make that happen!)
cons:
- occasionally it felt just a little too tricky/convenient - the tank, Kaz regurgitating helpful things not mentioned before, Jesper suddenly being Grisha (although this was carried through somewhat) (but its a heist novel, the Extra cleverness is kinda part of the genre)
- Inej's rejection of Kaz's inability to touch her :((( Kaz is traumatised! Maybe Inej doesn't know the full details and will change her mind when she knows, but pushing someone to go past something that triggers them is not love. This was perhaps the only point in the novel where I was like :(((( No. That's Bad.
- oh, also. Kaz's limp - he still manages to climb a bunch of stairs and cross landscapes and carry Inej and whilst it's mentioned that its painful...it never really influences the plot that much? I just felt like having one time when he genuinely was incapable to do something because of his limp would have been slightly more realistic. but, quibbles.
Overall!! excellent book, hugely enjoyed it! (read it on my 21st birthday and all!) I've wanted to read this since *checks calender* February, and I had to hunt down and read the Shadow and bone series before. and I don't regret it! SoC is fabulous and now I wanna get my grubby mitts on CK!
