Battle Royal by Lucy Parker

3.0

Oh, it was fine. Medium. I’m not mad I read it, but also would’ve been fine never having read it.

This book could’ve been a lot better if they’d fixed two things:

1. It’s 100 pages too long.
There is no reason for this story to be 400 pages. I was having a lovely time going along for the ride on the ridiculous scenes and cheeky humor, but then got stuck around the 65% mark. Everything started to get repetitive. The book also tried to add some depressing depth to the characters that felt sort of forced in certain ways. Eh.

2. The book doesn’t let us witness any of the exciting stuff.
Seriously. Something big or pivotal would be revealed at the end of a chapter, but then we don’t get to witness any of the fallout from it. You just turn the page to the next chapter and see that it’s 12 hours later and everyone has moved on. We get to witness zero dramatic conversations or actions. We just get a summary of it 12 hours later. I felt cheated over and over. In fact, there were a few times where I legitimately thought maybe my copy was missing some pages. Sadly, no. That’s just how the book goes.

Will I read the second one?
Jury is out on that. Maybe if it has a different audiobook reader. I reaaaallllly didn’t care for this one’s.
