The Queens of Innis Lear by Tessa Gratton
Did not finish book.
I should have read the Acknowledgements first where the author states she hated King Lear. It's incredibly obvious from her treatment of the character, resulting in a loss of some of the most iconic parts of the play.
The author did an amazing job of worldbuilding and characterization. I loved Goneril as a non-binary asexual and Regan's deep relationship with her husband. I also loved the depth given to Cordelia's character. The author certainly has skill writing and for that I gave it 3 stars.
But half way through the book jumps off the rails for me. I suppose someone who is less familiar with the original text would still enjoy it, but for me a lot of meaning was lost. The story lost dimension after part 3, and it seemed that once the author departed from the original story, she wasn't able to weave in the same depth as other authors who have reimagined Shakespeare. I was just really disappointed.
