Misery by Stephen King
4.0
"This was no dream. Just another day lost in the funhouse with Annie."
This is peak horror. I was transfixed by this book. Moments in this book made me feel ill. But wow, this was terrifying. Not this will give me nightmares terrifying, but I will never trust strangers again terrifying.
I can't give this book five stars as I am upset with how mental illness is talked about in this book. The reason for Annie's insanity, according to King, is her mental illness, whatever it may be. And this is a harmful stereotype, that people that suffer from mental illnesses are dangerous and crazy. As someone who is mentally ill, I did not enjoy how that was discussed. Obviously, something is not right in her mind, but depression is not what made her do what she did. People that suffer from depression, bipolar disorder, PTSD, anxiety, etc are not dangerous or crazy. That is a harmful stereotype and I need it to stop. Even in horror novels, where the extreme is discussed, I do not like it at all.
Besides that, I did enjoy this book. I am impressed at the kind of things King comes up with. The way he writes is fantastic. He is obviously a master of his craft.
