I enjoyed listening to this. It's set in 1965 New York City and covers big events like the assassination of Malcolm X and the U.S. invading the Dominican Republic. Poor 15-year-old Anna is married off to 32-year-old Juan in a family arrangement for Juan to take Anna and eventually the rest of her family to New York in exchange for their land. Juan takes on a lot of different jobs to get by in the world with his goal of being a restaurant owner with his brothers in the Dominican Republic. He isn't the nicest or best looking, but he's agreed to take care of Anna and her family. Anna wants to learn English, go to school, and get a professional job for herself. Along the way, there are trials and triumphs. This book really sets the stage to get a glimpse of what it was (and still probably is) like to come to America trying to make a better life for yourself and your family. My rating for romance is 💖💖.
