The List by Carys Jones

2.0

There are some positives about this book; the writing itself which isn't bad if you disregard the content. The pace is decent and I never considered not finishing it. The premise had promise and could have been very compelling but just fell short because of a completely unbelievable sequence of events, utterly unlikeable characters, and a supernatural/mental health element which was both clumsy and frustrating.

The story centres around the character of Beth who lives with her boyfriend Josh in a cottage in the woods and who is a projectionist in a cinema, so far, so dull. She goes out jogging every day in woods near her house (because of course she does) and finds a piece of paper with her name on it along with 4 other names. Cue a completely bonkers internet search, mental unravelling at the most ridiculous speed, ditching work to drive hours to find out more about these people and a descent into hallucinations and craziness. The entire premise was flawed because what person finds a piece of paper in the woods that has her name on it and immediately assumes it's a death threat, and goes to some really extreme lengths to research these names? No one. End of book. The whole things is nuts and the historic bad thing that the book centres on, while not completely unheard of, makes the central character a terrible human and she isn't really all that sorry either from what I can tell. She is sorry it affected her life but she blames the entire thing on other people when she is just as culpable.

Almost every action she took was crazy unlikely and had very little basis in what an actual person would do, even accounting for the fact that humans are weird and complex.

It gets a meh from me I'm afraid.
