Beautyland by Marie-Helene Bertino

4.0

This book is a 4.5 for me. More character driven than plot driven, but the main character is likable and well developed. I love the back and forth feeling as a reader, vacillating between "I relate to the experience of finding humans confusing, or at least not innately understanding human nature", and "oh it's not that complicated, this person is actually just the alien she believes herself to be." A sci fi book about space that asks you to look inward instead of out. Human beings are confusing and hard to understand. And what is normal anyway? And who decides what normal is?

"I require speech lessons and corrective lenses and most likely teeth braces. I am an expensive extraterrestrial.
