I was very intrigued by the premise a linguistics expert in a crime fiction book. I haven’t seen that before. And while it was unique, I can’t overlook some of the other parts of the book that were problematic:
1. The relationship between Maggie and Jackson / awkward at best. Cringy dialogue.
2. The fact that Maggie allows the bookstore owner to get away with a horrific crime and only threatens him to stop or she’ll tell. Like…are you serious?!?
3. The professor sub-plot was confusing, unnecessary, and left without resolution.
I had high hopes for this one, but I was really disappointed.
