The 57 Bus: A True Story of Two Teenagers and the Crime That Changed Their Lives by Dashka Slater
5.0
Sasha, a nonbinary teen, is asleep on a city bus when Richard, a fellow teen, lights Sasha's skirt on fire. Sasha's legs are quickly succumbed to flames, forever changing both of their lives.
This true story is filled with empathy - empathy for both the victim and perpetrator. While it doesn't go into in-depth on restorative justice, it introduces the concept enough that the reader comes away with a good feel for it.
Coming off jury duty for a criminal trial, the nuance of crimes is in the forefront of my mind. I wholeheartedly appreciate how the author handled this story and the players in it. It's not an earth-shattering story, as Sasha doesn't die, but I believe we can learn the most from stories like these because you can more readily see the various factors at play.
