What's not to like about an adventure book whose original title was "Jews with Swords"?

I wish more "literary" authors would write swashbuckling adventures with horses, espionage, swords, and good-natured con men. This was like any of the best fantasy stories you pick up in the mass market section, yet just a little... more elevated. Without being fussy. Fantastic.
