The Metamorphosis left me a bit confused from start to finish, but I somehow still really enjoyed reading it. It was an intriguing story, which felt quite ahead of its time to me with such a strong element of fantasy and surrealism.

Gregor wakes up one morning and finds himself transformed into a huge insect, unable to move properly, and with no explanation as to why.
However, his biggest concern at that moment is that he is late to work and must rush out to get there and explain. This is where the confusion started for me, as there was never any real acknowledgement by Gregor that this was an unusual, impossible situation (to say the least), and not just a minor inconvenience.

He continues in this fashion through the story, with his family reacting to his condition in a more appropriate way, and we soon discover the isolation which meets Gregor. He is rejected by everyone he knows, not realising that he can understand them, and begins to feel like a burden to the family, losing their main source of income, until eventually he passes away, still in his insect form.

It was quite sad really, especially as his sister begins to turn on him too when she was the only one who showed him any kindness since the transformation.

The story was only short, but it was very enjoyable and fun to read, so is a nice little piece of fantasy/surrealism for those interested. 4 stars.
