Saints and Misfits by S.K. Ali
4.0
Original unedited review:
I want the sequel misfits in love and I want it now.
S.K. Ali always knows how to make me cry.
Maybe I would have given this 3 stars? Because some characters grind on my nerves and oh the cringe and second hand embarrassment really got me here
and I have to keep reminding myself for example, “Janna is 15, be patient” but no
I liked how the story built up, I thought one of the climax points was really fitting
I also enjoy her writing style and I always highlight a few quotes in her books that are fantastic and I want to look at again
Edit:
I’ve been reading a few reviews and now I know how to articulate my thoughts. (I don’t I’m just going to try lol)
I touched upon it briefly in my original review- the second hand embarrassment and having to be patient with Janna- but now I feel like I can explain it. I understand the author showing Janna’s lax attitude with her hijab for this brief period of her life, and how she acted around and about Jeremy. I think it was good to explore that we can like non-Muslims and considering everything Janna was dealing with, she didn’t think much of what she was doing.
Janna felt prettier without her hijab- but that’s the point. We wear it because it’s not our physical attractiveness that should make you like us. Also, Janna herself reflected that her crush had no realistic future that aligned with her values. She made a mistake, regretted it and I hope her relationship with God and her conviction with hijab in the sequel would be stronger.
