Nightmare of a Trip by Maureen Kilmer

3.0

This is a relatively light, breezy read, despite purporting to be in the horror genre. About a classic family-in-a-minivan on a madcap road trip to Florida.

The writing is zippy and lightly sarcastic. The situations, like a paranormal activity at a Cracker Barrel or a nasty indoor water park are written with humor.

However the book is something I’d recommend for mainstream readers trying to dip their toes into spooky literature than for a die-hard horror fan. The “scary” sequences aren’t particularly suspenseful or terror inducing. Also, the backstory of the haunting is somewhat slapdash and a feels underdeveloped.

I think the ideal reader for this story is a mom who wants to dip her toe into stories with some horror elements. It’s definitely cute and witty, but it wasn’t exactly for me.
