The Ladies of the Secret Circus by Constance Sayers

4.0

3.75, truly. A "didn't-love-but-really-liked" book. I chose it for our Feb book club theme of "Outside the box," because when I bought this book at a warehouse sale in December, it was an impulse buy. I literally grabbed it out of a giant box and I knew nothing about it, nor the author. I just thought the cover looked cool.

Likes: the story itself, the snarky daemon, most of the characters weren't too contrived. Writing was good overall, and read more like YA, so was an easy read but still held my attention.

Dislikes: too many unnecessary details. I don't give a crap what every single character ate or drank every time they sat down, and it's easy to pick up characters' thoughts/feelings out of context, so stating their every single idea or feeling isn't necessary in 3rd person. Some of the unnecessary details really slowed the story down, at times.

Overall, a fun read that I stuck with, and it ended up surprising me. I usually can pick out what's going to happen, or at least guess. Parts of the ending are not as I predicted.
