Days of Blood & Starlight by Laini Taylor
3.0
April-May 2014 re-read: Yep, it totally holds up, and I'm really glad I re-read/listened because there are so many new details to track.

This is probably the best second-book-in-a-trilogy I've read since [b:Catching Fire|6148028|Catching Fire (The Hunger Games, #2)|Suzanne Collins|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1358273780l/6148028._SY75_.jpg|6171458]. I went into it with very low expectations (ahem, [b:Crossed|9794437|Crossed (Matched, #2)|Ally Condie|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1360083294l/9794437._SY75_.jpg|14449475]), and I was pleasantly surprised. This book is not nearly as thrilling or mystifying as [b:Daughter of Smoke & Bone|8490112|Daughter of Smoke & Bone (Daughter of Smoke & Bone, #1)|Laini Taylor|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1461353773l/8490112._SY75_.jpg|13355552], but how can it be? We are already familiar with the characters and the world. So, that's fine. I thought this was a fine second book. The author provides a lot more background information and insight into the main conflict, and I think it's good set-up for the third installment. There is a decent amount of action, and I think the overall plot advances, but it's not the breathless propulsion I think most readers will want. There are also a TON of new characters introduced, so fair warning.
But it's good. It's worth reading.
