Everyone who’s ever read one of my reviews is well aware that I’m not a fan of predictability. If the author telegraphs the entire plot just as we’re getting started, it takes a lot of the thrill out of “thriller”. This is one of the few exceptions. Any avid reader of suspense will know where this tale is going, but the plot is just twisty enough and the characters are just interesting enough to propel it forward. Plus, the climax is something special, if slightly muted for the amount of buildup the reader must endure to get there. Further positives include the high proportion of queer characters and the surprising originality the author finds within the genre of fiction-within-fiction. Overall, well done.
