Stonewall: Breaking Out in the Fight for Gay Rights by Ann Bausum

informative inspiring fast-paced

3.5

I just finished reading a book that offers a quick and concise history of the Stonewall riots and their aftermath. The author, in the conclusion, mentioned being asked to write a history of Stonewall for young people, and I think the book accomplishes exactly that. It's well-written, fast-paced, and easy to read, and it's clear that the author is knowledgeable about the subject.

However, I did notice a few issues that bothered me. The book seemed to be mainly focused on gay men, with very little information about the trans individuals or the people of colour involved in the riots. I was particularly interested in learning more about people like Marsha P. Johnson, who played a significant role in the events following the initial riot at the Stonewall Inn but whose story often gets overlooked or misrepresented. I would have appreciated more detailed accounts of individuals like her.

This book is brilliant as a quick introduction and basic understanding of this pivotal moment in history. If you want anything more detailed or if you've read books on this subject before then you probably won't learn much more from reading this book but it's important to note that the book wasn't intended for that either.
