The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna

lighthearted medium-paced

2.0

Romantic, little found-family cozy fantasy. It follows Mika, a witch who answers an odd request to help teach three younger witches how to control their magic.

This was cute! My first little foray into the true cozy-fantasy genre—and I gotta say, I just don’t think that it’s for me. For fans of that genre, I think this is a great book—but for me personally, I just found the stakes too low, and was bored through a lot of it. Don’t get me wrong, there’s drama and some conflict, but it all felt soft and we knew it would be resolved. It wasn’t particularly funny, or overly romantic, which would have made it more my speed to make up for the lower stakes, but that’s fine. Again, I think it fits very well into its genre, which I’m just realizing isn’t for me. Oh well! I’m glad I gave it a shot.
