Deena returns to her hometown feeling defeated after losing her mom, job, home, and marriage all within a year. A dead-end job, a second chance at love, and a new purpose help distract her from her ongoing grief. Her naturally inquisitive nature pulls her to uncover a mystery more insidious than gentrification, but I was so aggravated by her constantly putting herself (and others) in harrowing situations to propel the plot forward. The way you feel about this book will probably depend on how you feel about the ending. The attempt to tie-in a spiritual Gullah Geechee element fell flat for me.
