Dear Mrs Bird was so unique! I adored the style this book was written in, with all the characters names and phrases being so of their time. It really was a wonderful and immersive reflection of a wartime setting. I loved it from the very beginning.

The concept was great too, and I really enjoyed reading all the different letters that came in, and hearing about the other elements of the magazine. This was made even better for me by the final author’s chapter where she explained more about the idea behind the book and her inspiration for the different letters.

The only thing that I didn’t really enjoy was the argument between Emmy and Bunty. It really irked me and I felt that the blame was really put onto Emmy without reason. I know this was resolved eventually, but I felt that it was dragged out for a very long time with Emmy still feeling like she was t blame when this just didn’t seem fair. I thought her discussion with Bill was very valid, and not selfish at all, as Bunty seemed to think initially (and Emmy too to an extent), although I appreciate that she was grieving and looking for a scapegoat. But the fact that Emmy agreed with her just frustrated me.

Emmy was thinking about Bunty at the end of the day, and although her and Bill unfortunately did not have the chance to fix things, Emmy had tried, and Bill going off to find her before the raid wasn’t Emmy’s fault. It seemed so unfair to me to blame Emmy for his death. He could’ve died at any point during the raid or at any point during his firefighting work.

Otherwise, this was a hugely enjoyable read and I always looked forward to returning to it. Highly recommend!
