Whites: On Race and Other Falsehoods by Otegha Uwagba
challenging
reflective
fast-paced
5.0
Whites: On Race and Other Falsehoods was written following the murder of George Floyd by white police officers in May 2020. The footage of his murder was shared heavily across social media causing outrage and there seemed to a be a surge of white allyship.
I personally strive to teach my children about racism, I read and share work by Black authors and artists but that isn't enough. Uwagba's essay is brutally honest and is an uncomfortable read for white people. But that is the point.
This is an absolute must read for everyone, even if you think what you are doing is enough to show your support and solidarity. It forces us to look at ourselves, our behaviours and how we can change and do better.
