Somebody stop me 4 Mahairi McFarlane in 4 days! This is definitely different from her usual Rom/Com. It is way more hard-hitting than the others I've read (although all McFarlane books I've read cover serious and hard topics adding nuance to the genre) It's what makes them so real and grounded between the floof. This had all the strengths of some of her other books, emotive, quirky, strong main female character. Also, it benefitted in having the best developed main male character and backup characters from all the books of hers I have read. I think what let it down is the marketing. It is marketed as a Rom/Com of two best friends getting together after years. However, it is more a Mr. Darcy / Elizabeth retelling based on a plotline of grief and friendship. Which was brilliant but out of the left field. While I was expecting and hoping to laugh out loud/smiling while reading. I got to cry out loud at times. Also, I don't think the main characters' build-up was long enough or strong enough to explain their level of seriousness by the end. But I loved the introduction of a 3-months later element it gives you a nice neat ending. A switch up from Mhairi which is good so that her books don't become too same, but a bit of a wobble on the execution. Would absolutely recommend though, as long as you are in the mood for sad/romance instead of funny/sexy romance.
