The Canning Season by Polly Horvath
dark
2.0
I loved the main story line and the beautiful idea that family is not always those who share the same genes, but I did not enjoy the odd, gruesome details of a suicide that were weaved into the story. The first time it was mentioned I was surprised but was able to move forward. However the more the characters referenced the death, the more gruesome details came out and the more I was bothered by it. To me, it wasn’t quirky or even dark humor. It was horrifying. Since my boys had enjoyed one of Polly Horvath’s other books (The Night Garden), I had hoped this would be another one that I could pass on. Unfortunately, that is not the case.
