Hum by Helen Phillips

4.0

May, a married mother of two, participates in an experimental procedure that modifies the physical appearance of her face. The goal of the program is not exactly clear to her; but all May cares about is spending the money she makes on taking her family on a much-needed vacation. In a world ravaged by climate change and techno capitalism, May's decisions to give her children insight into the "world of before" lead to the central conflict of this book-- one that highlights that even in the future, mothers are still criticized far more than fathers.

I went into this book expecting it to be a speculative fiction book about the future, and ended up reading a book about motherhood.
