When I first read Mockingjay (I think like right when it came out?) I didn’t love it as much as the 1st and 2nd (it’s definitely more political, more complex, and perhaps less action packed than its predecessors), but I think I appreciate it so much more with this reread. The last book really solidifies everything that makes Katniss and this story so electrifying: she’s just a girl, as lost and clueless as the rest of us at 17 (and tbh for forever??), thrust into a political game largely without her consent. She’s continuously at the hands of adults, a pawn and a plaything and a symbol, when all she really cares about is her loved ones. And prim!!!!!!! God, I remember being upset but many tears were shed this time around. She’s deeply broken and full of rage and love and hope, an iconic addition to a long list of teenage heroines. I’m so thankful to have read this as a teen and again now with slightly more life experience to color in all of these complex themes.
