Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë

5.0

A true Victorian novel. Absolutely polarising, I understand why people both love or hate it. But I think it has amazing writing, descriptions, dialogue and atmosphere. With a full host of unlikable and at times monstrous characters. In other books a lack of likeable characters often makes me not care about the story as a whole. However this shows you how to write an amazing story, that the wicked and despicable characters actually add to creating a gothic, creepy, weird and cruel story. It is brilliantly structured, the repetitive nature of events and feeling of helplessness of circumstances is so good. For me having heard others describe this as a love story is completely false Cathy and Heathcliff's relationship is twisted and obsessive and they bolster the worst in each other. To me it is a story of cruelty, revenge, obsession and lack of true repentance. Brilliant!
