A really good middle grade or YA novel will appeal to kids with the story and adults with a sense of nostalgia. I can't speak to being a kid as I'm 42, but this book took me back in so many awesome ways. And the story is really good too.
I enjoyed that this is very much a horror book even with a young intended audience. The horror is PG-13, but Fink doesn't mess around. The imagery is creepy and the risks are real. There are hints of Nightmare on Elm Street, Coraline, Monster Squad, Labyrinth, Beetlejuice, and of course Welcome to Night Vale throughout (Dan Apel is totally from Desert Bluffs). This book is also the same flavor of innocent but not saccharine as The Adventures of Pete and Pete.
Highly recommend to tweens, teens, and adults.
