Challenger Deep by Neal Shusterman
5.0
This was a fantastic read covering a descent into schizophrenia and its effects on the mind. Caden, a teen who descents into the realm of schizophrenia that covers vast symptoms just like the ocean his delusional world rest on. He appears disorganized at sometimes. Repeats back what others say to him at others. Is paranoid that others are out to get him, that he is being watched. As his sickness descends, others slowly see the downward spin- Caden to the depths while all others stay at the shore.
This is a lyrical book that is akin to the descriptions of Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson. The way the worlds of delusion and reality blend and differences are striking. Both seem so opposite yet they are also so close battling inside one mind for dominance of the afflicted.
The strengths are of the imagery, capturing schizophrenia, and being understandable-if you catch it close enough. Glean into the eyes of psychosis is something that all should see for the unlucky 1 in 100.
Weaknesses, the main one, is unless you've been there you might not catch what it is like to slip so easily between the two worlds of reality and fantasy. You might not get the feeling of being alone in this disorder.
Overall I love it and have quickly made the rush to purchase this book just to highlight all my favorite quotes.
