The Things We Keep by Julee Balko
slow-paced
2.0
Let me start off by saying that I’ve been very fortunate and haven’t lost anyone close to me, so I don’t know grief first hand. Due to that, it might have skewed my view of the story.
Overall, I found the pacing of this book to be very slow. The timeline bounced around a bit, which made it harder to understand where we were in the storyline. I also struggled to connect with the characters and therefore with their grief. I found Serena to be frustrating, I couldn’t stand how she treated Tom and that she only seemed to care about Maggie.
There was a twist towards the end but I found it easy to predict the overall premise, although it felt wildly unbelievable when you got to the actual details.
Thank you to the author for this gifted book. This opinion is my own.
