Cool for You by Eileen Myles
5.0
There are some things I need to tell you about the little girl, her education. It’s a parable, and eventually the parable rots.
Does not deserve my feeble attempts at praise. Cool for You is about the horrors of living in an institutionalized society, the incredible love and solidarity and beauty that women find in each other, the dissonance of growing up white trash and reading poetry, the non-linearity of sexuality, the corrosive acculturation that targets immigrant families and attempts to strip them of anything that might undermine American epistemology, and the death grip of religion that hardly feels like anything at all. This is an ode to the particular kind of life that Myles has lived and everything that can be found or felt in it. Vulgar, tender, earnest, and lonely.
