The Berry Pickers by Amanda Peters
3.0
Overall great story and well narrated audiobook.
This story is about a Mi’kmaq family that travels to Maine from their home in Nova Scotia to pick berries during the season for money. Unfortunately things go sour and the youngest daughter, Ruthie, is kidnapped and her younger brother Joe is the last one to see her. The authorities do not care that an Indian girl is missing and you travel through Joe's point of view to see how through the years the family copes with the loss of Ruthie.
Our next point of view is from Ruthie, or Nora's, after she is kidnapped. At the age of four Nora doesn't even know that she was kidnapped. Her "parents" gas light her into thinking that she just has dreams and doesn't remember much from her childhood.
Overall this story is an emotional rollercoaster of grief and love, both good and bad types. It shows us that even a family that provides all the necessities to live aren't necessarily a loving family. Lies cut deep, and a golden cage, is still a cage. At times I was completely heart broken, others I was completely disguised. It is horrifying to think this was a common occurrence for so many groups of people in history. (honestly pretty sure this STILL happens.)
Side note: why the fuck do they all DRINK WHISKEY LIKE WATER ?
