This contemporary fiction is as close as you can get to fantasy without actually being fantasy. I feel like it would fit nicely on a shelf next to a set of fairytales. Indeed, within this story are several excerpts of fairytales written by Martha Storm, Zelda, and Betty.

Martha’s father could be infuriating and even her grandma sometimes got on my nerves. There were several other characters who obnoxiously took advantage of Martha, but I loved how she began to assert herself more, reconcile with her past, and make new friends and repair relationships along the way.

Overall, I enjoyed this story. I loved quirky Martha and watching her grow into a more confident woman. The book is a lovely comfort read—relaxing and easy prose, perfect for an evening after a tiring day.
