Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë
5.0
How come so many users always want to read about nice people? Stories where characters are a pain in the pass to everyone else tend to be some of the most entertaining ones out there, don’t you deny it! Wuthering Heights is a story on dominance and abuse, NOT romance. I think Emily Brontë was a very brave writer for coming up with this cast in plain 19th century, this was not the case of a writer not knowing better, she knew these characters were the best for the story she wanted to tell, and I respect that.
Now, what truly matters here is whether or not the framed story works for you. I personally think it worked perfectly well with the narrative, though I did miss some more insight on Heathcliff in the second half. I felt as if his development was put to a hold at a certain point in the story and the very distant narrative made him impossible to decipher.
But it’s fine. Brontë’s attempt is praiseworthy in and on itself in my opinion. Very ahead of its time! This was a very good read, though I don’t feel like loving it as much as others do. Maybe future rereads will change my mind?
