Smutty re-telling of Jasmine and Jafar. That I know a lot of people love and I can understand why. A consensual non-consensual relationship. Now I am not a stranger to 'dark' smut and 'dark' romance. There are even some well-written BDSM and 'dark' smut romances I enjoy, which is what makes me go back to these types of books. However, for me, just one element if removed would have changed this from a 2 to 4 star. My biggest turn-off is humiliation, especially when lumped with consensual non-consent, daddy kink, power imbalance, pet kink, etc. As there is a strong perceived power imbalance, adding humiliation (unless explicitly consented to), moves relationships outside of consensual for me. It shows a complete lack of agency from one party and a complete lack of care and consideration from the other. It always bugs me that these types of books have so many trigger warnings but never one for humiliation. This would often cause me to DNF a book but I did read through the rest of the book more quickly, as I did enjoy the concept and the writing and really wanted to see the setup for future books. I have other Katee Robert books and hope that this is a kink that is limited to Jasmine and Jafar and not normal for Katee's writing.
