They Both Die At The End by Adam Silvera
emotional
sad
medium-paced
4.0
I'm so conflicted with this story, because this feels like a 4 star read to me, and I loved the moments where Rufus and Mateo truly lived and the goodbyes they said to their friends. But the romance felt sudden enough to be jarring, and I don't think I liked the final pages overall.
Interspersed throughout are POV switches to people who are dying and not dying today, most connected to Mateo and Rufus's travels across the city. Some were really interesting, but I didn't really get the fake Harry Potter movie actor insert when the author could have just made up a movie.
There was something about the ending of this book that threw me. While I know the author was intending to show how sudden death can be, I think the choices made created an emotional disconnect and I struggled to really feel any emotion for the final chapters.
