Selling the Dream: The Billion-Dollar Industry Bankrupting Americans by Jane Marie
4.0
In all fairness, I had no idea that this was by a podcast host who’s work The Dream podcast basically touches on the same points. That, I’m sure, would influence a review had I listened. But to clarify, I never felt like I had to be a listener to enjoy this and it wasn’t a “podcast crossover book” that relies on terms and inside jokes.
I do enjoy a snarky little bit of nonfiction, and this is no exception. While it’s not the pinnacle of scholarly analysis into MLM financial pitfalls or regulations, it’s a wonderful primer on the industry. I think it made some very strong points and some of the strongest elements of this book were the somewhat sarcastic biographies of MLM founders and their companies.
The book was a little disjointed, and the chapters didn’t really flow into one another. I think as an essay collection it was more successful but it didn’t have any narrative cohesion. It seemed very much like the essays just started and stopped abruptly without much linking them to one another besides the underlying theme.
